In the

beginning…

I moved every year until I was ten so traveling is in my blood!  That’s me in the picture above in Italy with my family (they are very small so you can’t see them).  Of course, that’s not true.  You could see them perfectly well if you had proper glasses.

And meet our goats, Pan and Millie. Or maybe that’s Hazel.  I can never remember.  We live in Oregon and grow lots of healthy vegetables that my children refuse to eat.

When I was a kid, I thought it would be cool to go back in time, so most of my books happen in the past or in strange and wonderful places.  If I had one wish, it would be to go live in a book.  But just for a while.  I would miss my goats.

Here I am shortly after my lobotomy.  You can learn all about lobotomies in my book Believe.  Actually, that’s not true either.  But there is a joke about lobotomies in the book (official disclaimer: lobotomies are no laughing matter).

In fact, this picture was taken when I was goofing off with my daughter at a friend’s wedding.  I don’t take anything too seriously, except for world peace, nuclear disarmament, and frogs (sometimes).

These were my favorite books growing up: The Hobbit, Heidi, A Wrinkle in Time, The Secret Garden, Rinkitink in Oz and anything by Edward Eager.

I used to be a lawyer and would write long briefs, making other people wrong on a part-time basis.  I also used to homeschool my kids, and when they misbehaved, I would threaten to send them to school.  Now, they’re in high school, and when they don’t do their homework I threaten to homeschool them.  Query: do you think threats are an effective parenting strategy?  Discuss.

That’s a garbage kitty.  Isn’t he cute?  We saw a lot of those in Croatia.  The window picture is from Venice, the most magical city in the world.  When we were there, I decided to write a book about mermaids.

Writing books is like exploring other worlds, when it’s not like doing the laundry.  But even drudgery is fun when you are pursuing the thing you most want to do.  This is something you won’t read in a fortune cookie message.

What do you want to do most in world?
